W.H. Hostetter Had Splendid Record As a Private Resided For Many Years in Jackson Township – Lived in Lebanon For Fifteen Years – The Funeral of William H. Hostetter, who died last Thursday at his residence at 504 West North Street, in Lebanon was one of the best known citizens in the county. While he was born in Montgomery county, Ind., Oct. 3, 1849 he had lived most of his life in Boone county, the last fifteen years has been spent in Lebanon. He was reared on a farm. On September 12, 1861, he enlisted at North Salem in Co. A. 27 Ind. Volunteers. In the three-year service, He was placed in the army of the Potomac under Gen/ Banks, He fought at Winchester, VA. and at Cedar Mountain; he was also at the second battle of Bull Run; was at Antietam where his corps commander Gen. Mansfield, lost his life, and Mr. Hostetter was twice struck by bullets; was next at Chancelorsville and at Gettysburg. In July 1862, his regiment assisted in subduing the New York draft riots, and in September was sent back to the army of Potomac (*at the river Rapidan, He was) (*This whole line is upside down) then sent west and was at Chattanooga in the siege of Atlanta, and at the battle of Resaca at New Hope church and in the skirmishes innumerable. He was discharged September 1st, 1864. Mr. Hostetter was elected first commander at Antietam Post, No 524 at this place, which membership was later transferred in Advance, where his worth was again acknowledged and he was placed in the same position. Fifteen years ago Mr. Hostetter moved to Lebanon and soon afterward went into partnership with the late S.I. Gillam, in the insurance business. On the twenty- third of last February, he was taken ill with stomach trouble and this was the cause of his death. Mr. Hostetter was married Oct. 19th 1870 to Margaret A, Nicely, of near this place. The widow and the following children survive- Mrs. Chas. Airhart, Mrs. Lyle Mathews, Harry Hostetter. The brothers and sisters living are, - John of Oklahoma; Abram S. of Neodesha, Kas., Lewis, of Indianapolis; Allen H. of Douglas, Nebraska; Edgar of Whittier, Cal. James of Oklahoma; a half sister Mary L. Hunt , of Nebraska and sisters Malissa Orear, of Oregon and Emma Elliot of Cleveland, Oregon. He was a member of the Ebenezer church, at Advance, and of the Luther Lodge, No. 227 of this place.
