“Hostetter a Human Pincushion” – In a crowded
courtroom at Crawfordsville, directed by the presiding judge, two physicians
stuck pins into the body of William Hostetter of Ladoga, and held burning
matches to his flesh without producing any apparent effect. The test was
ordered by the court in order to establish the truth of an allegation that Hostetter
was shamming paralysis in order to prejudice the jury which was trying his
damage suit against a railroad company. - kbz
