Prof. John O. Hopkins, professor of Greek in Butler
University at Irvington died suddenly last Tuesday morning. While in the
president's room, about a quarter before 9 o'clock, he complained of loss of
sight and vertigo, and sinking back became unconscious and in a few moments was
dead, departing life without the contraction of a muscle and painlessly. All
the members of the faculty and many students were around him, applying
restoratives in the vain hope he would soon come back to consciousness but the
spirit had fled. He was the son of the late Hon. Milton B. Hopkins, former
superintendent of public instruction for the State. The deceased was well known
here having been engaged for a time in teaching at the Ladoga Academy. His
scholarship was of a high order and his accuracy and personal industry gave him
great influence over the students. As a Christian he lived a simple and
unpretentious life of great activity in every department of church work. The
funeral services took place Wednesday at the family residence in Irvington;
sermon by Dr. Burgess, president of the University. The body was brought to
Ladoga Thursday for burial.
