John F. Howard, eldest son of Wm. V. and Nancy Claypool Howard, was born in North Salem, Indiana April 16, 1854 and died at the home of his daughter Mrs. F.M. Odel in Lansing, Michigan at 8 a.m. Thursday June 29, 1916, aged 62 years 2 months 14 days. John Howard came to Darlington when a young man and it was here he married Mary E Naylor, daughter of the late Dr. IEG Naylor and wife. They lived here for some years where he worked as a painter and paper hanger. While here he was known as a congenial, hard working man. Later he with his family moved to crawfordsville where he engaged int he second-hand business. Some two years ago his health failed and he gave up his business and with his wife went to the home of their daughter. Here he lingered and suffered and became a constant charge to his friends, who did all that human aid could do until death came as a relief to both himself and friends. Besides many friends, he leaves a wife an d daughter at Lansing, two sisters and one brother in California and one brother at Terre Haute. His funeral was held here in the ME Church conducted by the pastor, Rev. Nicely, at 3 p.m. Saturday July 1. Interment was in the IOOF Cemetery. - typed by kbz
