Benjamin W. HOPPING, son of Joseph M. and Mary J. Berkshire Hopping was born near Yountsville, Montgomery County, Dec 17, 1871. He came of an old and honored pioneer family his father being one of the 49ers who made his way to California during the gold rush of that period, Benjamin inherited some of the qualities of his father, and he spent much time traveling over the western states, he having visited every state west of the Mississippi River. He had spent much time in the state of Oklahoma, where he had an interest in oil and farm lands. He was never married and his life, except for his residence and travel in the western states was lived with his brother and sister near Yountsville, where he was known as an upright honorable and honest citizen doing at all time for others what he would have them do unto himself. He had been in declining health for the past 18 months and seriously ill 4 weeks, during which time every effort was put forth to restore and prolong his life, but it was 3without avail for in the early morning hours of Jan 17 he passed away in his old home and that of his brother and sister at the age of 66 years 1 month leaving to mourn one brother, John B. Hoping and one sister, Miss Bettie F. Hopping, both of whom reside in the old home many other relatives and a host of friends. His father and mother, as well as sister, Thirza 3 years of age passed away many years ago. Benjamine (sic) HoppingĀ“s life was so lived and his devotions and kindness to his relatives and friends and his relation to the community in which he was known have been such that he will be much mourned and his passing will be much regretted but he has paid the price allotted unto all mankind and has gone unto his reward, and may peace be unto his departed soul.
