George W. Holladay, 81, Darlington, died 7:50 p.m. Monday in
St. Clare Medical Center, Crawfordsville.
Mr. Holladay worked for Allisons Transmissions at Lebanon,
then National Homes at Lafayette for 29 years and was a janitor
at North Montgomery High School, retiring in 1986. He also mowed
Sugar Creek Township Cemetery for 19 years.
He served in the Army during World War II in Africa, Germany
and France and was awarded the Bronze Star. His memberships
included Wesleyan Church, Thorntown, and Veterans of Foreign
Wars, Crawfordsville.
He was born July 14, 1922, at Clarks Hill, to Frank and Minnie
Mable Hullinger Holladay. He married Dorothy Coddington Grimes on
May 3, 1947, at Darlington. She died March 6, 1988.
Survivors include three daughters, Sara Kelly, Darlington, and
Carolyn Houchens and Barbara McDale, both of Clarks Hill; a son,
Ernest, Clarks Hill; three brothers, Cecil, Thorntown, Robert,
Terre Haute, and Earl Eugene, Lebanon; a sister, Naomi Montonya,
Tucson, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and
12 great-grandchildren.
A brother and three sisters are deceased.
Funeral services are scheduled 1 p.m. Friday in Russell &
Hitch Funeral Home, 116 W. Plum St., Thorntown, with the Rev.
Vernon Dowell officiating. Burial will be in Darlington's
Independent Order of Odd Fellows Cemetery. Friends may call 4-8
p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
