Terre Haute, Ind July 14 – Dr. Linnaeus N. Hines, who served as president of the Indiana State Teachers College here from 1921 to 1934, died at his home here late today. He was 65 years old. Dr. Hines, one of the best known educators in the Middle West, never fully recovered from a stroke sustained two years ago, although he had been able to attend his duties as alumni adviser and director of student activities at the college throughout the year. Dr. Hines was born in Carthage, Mo and came to Indiana with his parents when he was a child. He was educated in Indiana schools. He was graduated from the Noblesville HS and received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University in 1894.  In 1908 he received a master’s degree from Indiana.  He also was a post graduate student at Cornell and Columbia Universities. His entire life was devoted to Indiana schools as Dr. Hines served successfully as principal at Noblesville, Evansville, Shortridge HS at Indianapolis and then as Superintendent of Schools at Union City, Hartford City and Crawfordsville.  He was elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction in 1919 and resigned from that post in 1921 to accept the presidency of Indiana State.  Dr. Hines and his family came to Terre Haute in 1921 and he immediately became a leader in civic activities here.  Soon after he became president of Indiana State, Dr. Hines instituted a building program which with the other innovations he made, increased the school’s popularity so that its enrollment was doubled in a short time. The new Physical Education Building and dormitories were erected and the new laboratory school started under his administration.  He instituted a program of student activities and strengthened the Alumni Association.  Following his resignation from the presidency in 1934 because of ill health he was retained on the faculty as alumni adviser and director of student activities.  Dr. Hines is survived by the widow, Bertha; one son, Neal O. Hines, a member of the editorial staff of the Terre Haute Star and one daughter, Anne.  Funeral arrangements had not been completed tonight. - kz
