Himes - William

Source: Greencastle Herald 2 Nov 1910 p  4

Daniel C. Himes succeeded his father, William Himes as owner of the home farm near Whitesville on the east and he is making some changes there, says the Ladoga Leader. William Himes was one of the old time expert fishermen. He knew exactly the kind of bait to use in the different seasons for the various kinds of fish, knew when the sign was right for the fish to bite and he knew also where the best “Holes” were in all the near streams within a half-day’s drive of his home.  He lived comfortable and happily, he and his good wife and they enjoyed life in his old-time way but Mr. Himes kept his farm and farm home with as few changes as possible from the condition they were in when they came into his ownership.  He was one who preferred to live back off the road with a timber track between his home and the public highway and he sold little of the timber.  After his father’s death, Daniel C, having more of the modern spirit of progress made some changes in the farm and they were changes that improved it too.  He cleared up and sold some of the timber and built his home out near the road.  He also bought an automobile and he is getting a great deal of enjoyment from it too.  Some years ago he raised many water lilies in what had been his father’s well known fish pond and lilies attracted much attention and were in demand by those who appreciated their beauty. But his latest venture is raising skunks and he is making a success of it for he knows their habits and their requirements and knows how to take care of them.  He has provided them with a range with many hiding places and has cared for them until they are almost as gentle as house cats.  He handles them without fear and they seem to like it and understand that he is their friend. When visitors go there Mr. Himes takes great pleasure in showing his skunks and to exhibit them properly he picks up one at a time by the tail and holds it up in view while he explains its marking and other good points.  The skunks have beautiful fur and it is much in demand by the fashionable ladies so there is quite a profit in the skunk raising industry and there is pleasure in it for those who understand how to carry on the work.  Mr. Himes is one who understands it thoroughly. There are few people who know of this Montgomery County skunk farm but is there at the old Himes homestead near Whitesville and it is well worth a visit.  Mr. Himes can tell you much that you never had an opportunity to learn before and he can give you a close view as close as you dare to take of several families of skunk. - kbz
