Hills - Clara Conrad
Source: Crawfordsville Daily Journal Friday, 6 Feb. 1891
Well may death be called beautiful when it comes as it did to Clara Connard Hills shortly after 8 o’clock this morning. Taken suddenly sick last Sunday of a disease that form the very first baffled the physician’s skill, she daily grew worse and last night all hope was lost. About two hours before the end, her failing strength rallied and she talked in a clear strong voice. She spoke a last good bye to each member of the family, left loving messages for all absent friends, and all her old school mates, naming each one. She arranged most of the details of her funeral and her last request was that she be buried in her wedding dress. She also desired “Some Sweet Day,” to be sung at her funeral. Rev. E. B. Thomson, who took her into Center Church when she was fourteen years old, was present to comfort her last hours. Her faith in an immortality was firm and her only regrets were at leaving her little baby. Clara Connard Hills was born in this city Sept. 17, 1869, and was married Oct. 3, 1889, to Homer C. Hills, and to them one child was born, Margarette, aged seven months. Henry W. Connard and wife are her parents and there are two brothers, Harry and Hiram, and one sister, Mrs. James Breaks. The funeral will occur on Sunday.
