CHARLES HILLARD

Source: Crawfordsville Daily Journal Tuesday Oct 20, 1914

Charles Hillard, 65, who had lived all his life in Montgomery County with the exception of the last 3 months, committed suicide Monday morning near Greenwood, Ind by drinking carbolic acid. His body was brought back to the city Monday night by his half-brother, Daniel Hillard. Mr. Hillard was born in Darlington. He was the son of Christopher Hillard. His only surviving relative is Daniel Hillard. The body which arrived here on the 11 o'clock Ben-Hur car Monday night was taken to the home of the half-brother South Grant Avenue. Funeral services will be from this home Wednesday afternoon with burial in Masonic Cemetery. The suicide of the former Montgomery County man occurred at the farm of James Jones near Greenwood Monday. Mr. Hillard had been working on the Jones farm. He seemed in his usual good spirits on retiring Sunday evening and the discovery of his dead body with an empty acid bottle at its side proved a severe shock to the family with whom he had been employed. He had shown no signs of despondency and the Jones family saw no indications in his actions that he was feeling badly. Mr. Hillard left this county a few months ago after being employed on the Remley farm near Crawfordsville. He had spent the summer on the Jones farm near Greenwood. -- kbz
