Arthur Frank (Bones) Hightower, 86 veteran retired MidStates Steel & Wire Co employee died Wednesday night at the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette. He had been ill for two weeks. Hightower started work at the local plant in 1900 when it was the Crawfordsville Wire & Nail Co. When the first mill burned down in 1901, he left the company for three years, but returned in 1904 and remained there until his retirement in 1961. Mid-States purchased the plant in 1928, and has continued its operation since that time. Hightower held a large number of jobs during his long career there. Born June 22, 1880, in Crawfordsville, he was the son of William and Lydia Ann Lamb Hightower. He was twice married – first to Eleanor Lucille McMullin. After her death he married Nora Wells who also preceded him in death. Mr. Hightower was a charter member of the Milligan Memorial Presbyterian Church. He also belonged to the Eagles Lodge and Father’s Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The survivors include two sons, George Hightower of Lafayette and William Hightower of Spokane, Wash; a sister, Mrs. Fred Whittington of Crawfordsville; a brother, Floyd Hightower of Indianapolis and one granddaughter. Another son, Francis, preceded him in death. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hunt & Son Funeral Home with burial in Old Union Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Friday. – kbz
