Silas Hiatt, of Darlington, died on Saturday afternoon at three o’clock. The funeral occurred on Monday in Darlington at the South Christian Church, interment in the Odd Fellows’ Cemetery.
Mr. Hiatt had the distinction of being the first white male child born in Montgomery County. So far as is known only one white child was born here before him, that being the daughter born to Mr. and Mrs. William Offield, the first settlers of the county.
Mr. Hiatt was a son of John Hiatt who settled in Union Township in 1823, coming from North Carolina. Silas was born August 5, of that year. He took part in the hard work of the pioneering days and received the meager education at that time obtainable. At eight years of age he was working in the fields and so long as his physical powers remained, he was busy about his fine farm.
In 1843 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Kashner, who lived but a short time. In 1848 he was married to Miss Eliza Booher, and to them were born seven children, six of whom still live: William Hiatt, of this city, Ira Hiatt of Darlington, Mrs. Avery and Mrs. J. T. Phillips of Clinton County, Mrs. J. A. Bowers and Mrs. Albert Mullen of Darlington. Mrs. Hiatt died last November.
Mr. Hiatt had been a life long member of the Newlight Church and was prominent in its councils. He was also a prominent Odd Fellow. He was known by all as an honest man and thoroughly good citizen and the influence of his life’s work for good will long remain in the community.
