In its account of the death of John Hiatt the Lafayette Courier says;
John Hiett (Hiatt) one of the best known and one of the oldest citizens of this county died at his home near Sugar Grove on last Saturday evening, the ailments of old age being the cause. He was born in Adams County, Ohio October 26, 1808 and was married to Elizabeth Hawk, of Brown Co Ohio in 1829. Four children were born to them, William, Mary, James and Philip. Mrs. Hiatt died in 1834, and the bereaved husband removed to this county during the following year, locating in Jackson Township where he resided ever afterward - a tern of 60 years. In 1837 he married Miss Sarah A. Odell, also a native of Brown County, five children born to them: John; Francix; Susanna, Samuel and Nathaniel. In 1846 Mr. Hiatt was again robbed of his wife, death claiming her. Two years later he married Miss Mary F. Davidson, who survives him. 8 children blessed this union: George W; Alfred C; Emery R; Henry W; Isabelle; Sarah; Charles and Margaret. THe children are scattered all over the country and are influential people wherever they may be. One daughter married Rev. WD Switzer of Michigan City and was with her father when he died. Mr. Hiatt was an ardent republican, and was long associated with the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was recognized as an honorable, upright, conscientious man and his example in life was one that should stand forever before the young men of this community. The funeral will be held at the Sugar Grove ME Church Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock. - kbz
