A death which brought sadness to many Darlington homes, was that of Charles Elmer Hiatt, known as "Doc," which occurred at his home in Leiter's Ford Monday night at 9 o'clock. Ten days before he became ill with influenza which developed into pneumonia to which he succumbed in spite of every medical attention available. Mr. Hiatt was born in Fulton County Jan 9, 1878. He obtained his education in the county schools and later attended the Rochester Normal after which he became a teacher. He taught one term at Bowers and two terms here. While here he met Miss Pearl Cox to whom he was married Sept 18, 1907. After leaving Darlington he gave up teaching and entered business at Leiter's Ford with Dr. BF Overmeyer with whom he has been associated for the past 11 years. Mr Hiatt was a wide awake companionable young man and his cheerful courage often brought happiness to those who thought their world was full of care and sorrow. Relatives here were notified of the seriousness of his condition and WA Burgin, RB & Byron Cox went to Leiters Ford Sunday. Mr. Burgin had just reached home Monday night when a message arrived announcing Mr Hiatt's death but the brothers remained. A short funeral service was held at the home in Leiters Ford Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. Harris of the ME Church officiating. The body which was accompanied by the wife and her brothers and Mr. Hiatt's brother and sister, John and Miss Stella Hiatt arrived here Wednesday night at 9:05 and was taken to the home of Royal Cox. Yesterday afternoon another service was held at the ME Church in charge of Mrs. Hiatt's uncle Rev. MH Appleby of Crawfordsville. Mrs. F. Cornell, Mrs. Bert Hiatt, Walter Stewart and Chas. Marshall sang. Interment was made in the Odd Fellows Cemetery. -- klbz
