SAMUEL HOWE HESTER

Samuel Howe Hester was born in Flemingsburg, Fleming Co, Ky, Oct 25, 1835. He was the son of Conrad and Margaret Hester and was one of a family of 6 children, five sons and one daughter, all of whom with the exception of the daughter, Mrs. Catherine Sidener have passed to the spirit world. When he was 3 years old, his parents came to Indiana and settled W. of Parkersburg. Here he grew to manhood and took part in toil and hardships of those days. He was married to Josephine Armstrong, Oct 1867. To this union were born three children, Lucretia who died Sept 3, 1881; Thomas W. at home and William of near Waveland. His wife died April 19, 1908. In the dark days of the Civil War he heard the call of duty and enlisted in the 88th Ill. regiment, Aug 14, 1862 and fought with other brave men in defense of his country. Uncle Sam possessed a kind and generous heart toward his friends. He was always ready to help in caring for the sick and when death visited the homes of his neighbors he was to be found there proving his sympathy by assisting them in every way he could. He is survived by two sons, six grandchildren and one sister. Fun. services were conducted by Rev. SG Smith at Parkersburg, April 23, 1923. The remains were laid to rest in Indian Creek So. of New Market. - kbz
