Hillsboro - Claude Hershberger, 84, who assisted with organizing REMC in Fountain County died Thursday in Lakeview Medical Center at Danville, IL where he had been a patient 10 days. Born June 28, 1893, at Covington, he was the son of Ross & Melissa Reed Hershberger. A short time later the family moved to Kansas. In 1900, the family returned to this area. They travelled in a covered wagon which was ferried across the Mississippi River. Mr. Hershberger farmed in the Hillsboro area for 70 years. He was a member of Hillsboro United Methodist Church and served as its treasurer and trustee for many years. He was a charter member of Come Join Us Club, 50-year member and past chancellor of Hillsboro K of P, and charter member of Fountain County Farm Bureau. He attended schools at Covington and Hillsboro. He married Dec 29, 1917 at Hillsboro Emma Smith. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Robert R. of Speedway and James M of Hillsboro; 5 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Services will be 10:30 am. Saturday in Crumley-Williams Funeral Home here with the Rev. Dorman Winger and Rev. Ernest Hayden officiating. Burial in Waynetown Masonic cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 6 p.m. today.
