Herdman - Marion - Montgomery InGenWeb Project

The community was shocked Saturday evening to learn of the death of Miss Marion Herdman. She had been ill for several weeks with typhoid fever, but the reports had nearly all been favorable and the general impression was that she would recover. She passed away Saturday afternoon at half past 3 o’clock. The funeral occurred Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock and was conducted by Dr. E. B. Thomson, Dr. J. F. Tuttle and Dr. G. S. Burroughs. The remains were taken to Morrisonville, Ill., Monday for burial. Dr. Thomson’s remarks were particularly consoling to Miss Herdman’s friends and we produce them in part:

Marion Gilson Herdman was born at Morrisonville, Ill., June 1, 1873. There she spent the early part of her life, when she entered the Monticello seminary from which she was graduated with the highest honors of her class in June, 1892. At 13 years of age she united with the Presbyterian Church at Morrisonville, transferring her membership to Center Presbyterian Church of this city when she came here two years ago. She was an earnest and faithful Christian. Her character was as pure as that of a little child. She was the very life of the home circle and a true and constant friend to all who knew her. Simple and unassuming in all her acts she yet found a place in every heart. Her love for music and her ability in rendering it enabled her to give pleasure not only to friends but to be a leader in the worship of the sanctuary. Suddenly from the church below she is taken to the church above. And while lost in wonder we and only say, “Even so, Father, for so it seemeth good in Thy sight.”
