Hays - Charles Eddy

Charles Eddy Hays, son of Rev. S.M. Hays, departed this life October 7, 1873 in his 19th year. He was taken with a violent cold last Christmas which affected his lungs and gradually settled in consumption. A short time ago, he came from Pleasant Hill, where his father now resides to his grandmother’s living on the old homestead three miles south of Crawfordsville where he died. Eddy, as his name was familiarly known by the family and neighbors, united with the ME Church when he was 13 years of age, but being influenced by youthful and gay associations he to a great extent, lost his interest and enjoyment in religion. During his affliction however, his thoughts turned seriously to the subject of a preparation for death; and looking to the Savior, calling upon his name, and trusting in him for pardon and salvation, he soon received the evidence of his acceptance with God, and could say: “I have no fears of death.” He received the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper a few days before his death. His last hours were calm and peaceful. He died trusting in the Savior. A large concourse of friends assembled at the residence to attend the funeral obsequies. After religious services, the body was conveyed to the cemetery at Finley Chapel, where the burial took place in the use of the ritual of the IOGT, a number of the members of Pleasant Hill Lodge of which he was a member being present and officiating. The parents and friend have our sympathy and prayers. This is a very sore affliction and yet they mourn not as those who have no hope. Their loss in his gain … his toils are past, his work is done. DIED - Hays—On the 7th of October, 1873, Charles Eddy Hays, son of Rev. S. M. Hays, aged 19 years.
He was taken with a violent cold last Christmas, which affected his lungs, and gradually settled in consumption.
