Arley C. Hays, 86, 402 Mill St., died at Culver Hospital Tuesday morning after a brief illness. He had been hospitalized since Friday. Born Sept. 6, 1878, near Colfax, Mr. Hays was the son of James and Jane Rine Hays. He married Edith Elnora Campbell on Sept. 8, 1904, and the couple began housekeeping in Crawfordsville. Mr. Hays was a member of the Smartsburg Christian Church where he had served as an elder, a trustee and a Sunday School superintendent in past years. As a young man, Mr. Hays spent a short time in Iowa before his marriage. The couple moved from Crawfordsville to Butte Valley, Calif., returning to Crawfordsville in 1912. They lived near the city for many years on a farm which he operated. Hrs. Hays preceded her husband in death on Nov. 27, 1956. Mr. Hayes was also connected with the Montgomery County Sales Pavilion and was a school bus driver in the county. He retired from active work three years ago. Mr. Hays was also preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. Survivors include five sons, Donald and Harold, both of Crawfordsville, David and Cleon, both of Indianapolis and Max of Glendale, Calif.; a daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Peffley of Crawfordsville; 12 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Smartsburg Christian Church with Rev. John R. Servies officiating. Rev. James E. Thomas will assist. Burial will be in the Crawfordsville Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the Bright Funeral Home after noon Thursday.
