Hayden - 1874 - killed

Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal Saturday, 19 September 1874

Tuesday evening about four o’clock two citizens of Chambersburg, named respectively Hayden and Hughey, got into an affray about some business matters, which resulted in the shooting of Hayden by Hughey, which will probably prove fatal. The shooting was done with a navy revolver, loaded with shot, which took effect in the abdomen. Several citizens were present at the time of the affray, but instead of arresting the shootist, went to Veedersburg for a warrant for his arrest; and, as might be expected, upon their return, the bird had flown. At the time of writing this, the wounded man was still alive, but no hopes are entertained of his recovery, and the murderer is yet at large. The action of the parties who were present is strongly condemned. Various reasons are given for their not doing so, the most plausible of which is that they, like Dave Crocket was with the bear, “wanted to be on the sunny side of the law.” - kbz
