Dr. Andrew Jennings Hay, who has been a sufferer from dropsy for the past year, died at 11 o’clock Tuesday night at the residence of Mrs. Mary D. Whitford on East College Street.
Dr. Hay was born in Charleston, Ind., April 8, 1821. He was twice married. His first wife was Miss Rebecca Garrett. By this union there were three children, all of whom are living, namely: Mrs. Henry Durbin, Anderson, Ind., Eugene G. Hay, of Minneapolis, Minn, and Mary G. Hay, of Indianapolis. Dr. Hay’s second marriage was to Miss Virginia Naylor, who survives him. By this marriage there were two children, Miss Flora Hay and Mrs. Wirt E. Humphrey, of Chicago, Ill.
Dr. Hay was a prominent citizen in the county where he resided, being sent to the Legislature for two terms and again serving the people as an efficient official in the capacity of Clerk for Clarke County for two terms. When the war broke out in 1862, he was appointed enrolling commissioner with headquarters at Jeffersonville. He was national bank examiner during President Garfield’s term of office. Dr. Hay was the grandson of Indiana’s first governor, Hon. Jonathan Jennings, in honor of whom he was named. Dr. Hay was prominent in Masonic circles and a man highly esteemed both in professional and social circles. The body was taken to Charleston yesterday
