Covington, Ind. (CNS) — James P. Hastings, 80, a Covington merchant the past 50 years, died at 8:50 a. m. yesterday (Dec. 11, 1966) at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville. He had been a patient there since Dec. 6 and had been ill two years. Born Sept. 9, 1886, at Martinsville, Ind., he was the son of William K. and Mary Buckner Hastings. He was married May 12, 1909, to Edith Hunt, who died Oct. 25, 1963. Mr. Hastings was a member of the Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder for several years. He was a 50-year member of the Fountain Masonic Lodge 60 and had served for several years as president of the Covington Building & Loan Association. He had operated the Hastings Jewelry Shop. He also was a member of the Citizen's Scholarship Foundation and Watchmakers Association of Indiana. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Mary Layton of Covington and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Services will be at 2 p. m. EST Wednesday at the Bodine & Shelby Funeral Home in Covington. The Rev. John G. DeKruyster will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery. The body is at the funeral home. Friends will be received after 7 tonight and after noon tomorrow. Masonic rites will be at 8:30 p. m. Tuesday. --typed by Walt W

James Presley Hastings, age 80, a prominent businessman in Covington for 60 years and president of the Covington Building and Loan Association for a number of years, died at 8:50 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, in St. Elizabeth Hospital in Danville, Ill. He had been in ill health two years and was hospitalized since Dec. 6. Mr. Hastings was born Sept. 9, 1886 in Martinsville, the son of William Kelley and Mary Buckner Hastings. He was married May 12, 1909 to Edith Hunt, who preceded him in death Oct. 25, 1963. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Covington and had served as an elder for several years. He was a 50-year member of Fountain Lodge 60, F&AM, and was president of the Covington Building and Loan Association for a number of years and was serving in that capacity at the time of his death. He had been a prominent businessman in Covington for 60 years. He first was associated with Hastings & Hunt Drugs and presently owned and operated Hastings Jewelry on the east side of the square. He was a member of the Citizens Scholarship Foundation of Covington and the Watchmakers Association of Indiana. Mr. Hastings is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Max (Mary) Layton of Washington St., Covington, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Bodine and Shelby Funeral Home, Covington. Dr. John G. DeKruyter of Crawfordsville, supply pastor at the Covington Presbyterian Church, officiated and burial was in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Covington. --typed by Walt W
