Mrs. Martha Ann Hartman, wife of William Hartman, died at her home, corner of Market & Washington Streets, at 8 o'clock p.m. Feb 12 after a long and tedious illness, aged 73 years. The maiden name of the deceased was Martha Ann Austin. She was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky Dec 12, 1815. In 1828 at the age of 13 years, she came with her parents to Indiana where she has since resided. Over 50 years ago she united with the Missionary Baptist Church and has been a zealouis, consisted member since as all who knew her will testify. She has been twice married, first to Charles Shanklin, who died many years ago, leaving her with one child, John SHanklin who died Feb 22, 1876. She afterwardmarried William Hartman who survives her, together with one son, William A. Hartman and several step sons and daughters. She was a sister of Samuel Austin, Cashier of the First National Bank of this city; AV Austin, an attorney of Thorntown, Mrs. HP Ensminger, Mrs. William Campbell and Mrs. Ashenhurst. Having lived out the years alloted to man, it was necessary for her to pay the penalty of all flesh. Her life was pure, and in all her relations as a wife, a mother, a neighbor and Christian, her acts and deeds will bear the closest scrutiny of a critical world, and at the close of life she was prepared to hear the glad tidings, "Well done!" from the lips of Him who "knoweth all things." The funeral took place last Tuesday at 2 o'clock. Services conducted by Rev. GP Fuson of the Missionary Bpatist Church. Interment at the Masonic Cemetery. -- kz
