D.W. Hartman died at his home on Morgan St. Had he lived until the following Monday he would have been 59 years old. He was born, raised up in this town and all his life resided here. He was an ideal citizen, honorable, christian, manly. It was a pleasure to know him and everyone was his friend. The funeral was on Tuesday from the home and was by Rev. G.W. Switzer. Mr. Hartman was taken into the M.E. church 20 years ago. His funeral was in charge of the Masonic Order and interment was at Oak Hill. he was twice married; his first wife being the daughter of I.F. Wade, and to them two children were born, Ferris and Althea Luse. His first wife died in the infancy of these children. Both these children are now in London, Ferris singing in burlesque opera in which he is a star, and the daughter is playing in "The cat and the cherub." Mr. Hartman's second and surviving wife was Mrs. Wise and to them one child was born, Robert. David Harman was one of the best known men in the county. He was the son of William Hartman, not long since dead, and the brother of Mrs. William Tomlinson, Samuel and William A. Hartman. He was a man who will be greatly missed by the whole community. Since his retirement from the office of township trustee he has been interested in a pottery at Gas City, though he continued to make this city his home. His entire system has been going down for some time though he was not regarded as being in a dangerous condition until a few days before his death. The funeral was very largely attended in spite of the cold weather. -kh

David W. Hartman died Saturday night about eleven o’clock at his residence on Morgan Street. His demise was not unexpected as his recovery had been despaired of since Thursday. He had been in poor health for some time, suffering from the grip, but only for a few days had his case been regarded as serious and his death came as a shock to his many friends. The funeral occurred Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity the Rev. Dr. Brumbaugh and Rev. G. W. Switzer, of Lafayette, conducting the services. Interment was at Oak Hill.
Mr. Hartman was born in Crawfordsville just fifty nine years ago Monday and was the son of William Hartman, a pioneer resident of the place. He grew to manhood here and served during the war in the 10th Indiana Infantry. On Sept. 4, 1861, he was married to Miss Julia Wade, daughter of I. F. Wade. She died after three children were born to them. Two of these children still live, Ferris Hartman, the well known operatic comedian of San Francisco, and Alethea Luse Hartman, who is now in London, with “The Cat and the Cherub” Company. Mr. Hartman was married December 19, 1872, to Mrs. A. F. Wise and of the three children born to them, one, Robert, survives. Besides the widow and children, Mr. Hartman leaves two brothers, Samuel and William, and one sister, Mrs. Martha Tomlinson.
Mr. Hartman was engaged as a contracting painter for some time but abandoned this business when elected trustee of Union Township, an office which he filled with distinguished credit and honor for six years. Upon retiring from office he resided for some months at Gas City where he engaged in the pottery manufacture. He returned to Crawfordsville some time since and was prominently mentioned as Republican candidate for Mayor at the coming election.
Perhaps, no citizen of Crawfordsville was higher in the estimation of his townsmen than Mr. Hartman. Modest, unassuming, and of a kindly heart, he attracted all classes to himself and in dying leaves a memory characterized by something more than a reputation for honesty and fair dealing. -s
