Andrew Douglas Harpel, 97, retired farmer and former Montgomery County school teacher died Thursday afternoon in Culver Hospital following a week's illness. Born May 24, 18663 in Newton County, Mr. Harpel was the son of John and Lyda Jennings Harpel. He married Cora Fruits April 4, 1894. Mr. Harpel, who was one of the oldest residents in Montgomery County farmed and lived west of Shannondale for many years. He attended the old Ladoga Normal School and Wabash College. Mr. Harpel was a charter member of the Montgomery County Farm Bureau and a former member of the Farm Bureau's board of directors. Survivors include three sons, Alfred Harpel of Linden, Walter Harpel of Shannondale and Donald Harpel, at home; two daughters, Mrs. Faye Cruea of Crawfordsville and Hazel Harpel, at home; a half brother, Floyd Harpel of Hillsboro, four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in March 1960 and by a daughter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hunt & Son Funeral Home, Rev. Everett Nixon of Kokomo will be the officiating minister. Burial will be at the Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home.
