James Harris, aged 83 years, a pioneer of Montgomery county, died at his home near New Ross, Monday afternoon about 5 o’clock. Sunday morning he suffered a double stroke of apoplexy and never regained consciousness. Funeral services were held Wednesday morning at 10 o’clock at the New Ross Christian church.
“Uncle Jerry” Harris, as he was affectionately known to a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, was born in Virginia 83 years ago, august 20, last. At the age of four years he came with his parents to Montgomery county and settled near New Ross. He followed the occupation of farming with success until advanced age forced him to retire.
Three years ago Mrs. Harris preceded him in death and some time later he lost his only daughter. Only one child, a son, C.L. Harris, Pike Street, Crawfordsville, who was at his father’s bedside when the end came. A sister, Mrs. Jessie McIntyre, north of New Ross, is also living. Mr. Harris was a member of the Primitive Baptist church, Crawfordsville, and was well know and highly respected.
