NEW RICHMOND — Roy B. Hanawalt, 74, resident of New Richmond for 58 years, died at 6:15 a.m. Saturday at Veterans Hospital in Marion where he had been a patient approximately two years. Born in Benton County on Oct. 13, 1891, he was a son of Austin and Mary Voltz Hanawalt. He was married to Helen Linn on Oct. 19, 1925 in Crawfordsville. A New Richmond High School graduate, Mr. Hanawalt was a part owner in Hanawalt & Son Clothing Store here and later was a rural mail carrier for 30 years. He was a member of the New Richmond Methodist Church, a 50-year member and past master of New Richmond Masonic Lodge No. 604 and a member of the New Richmond OES No. 377. Mr. Hanawalt was also a past president of the New Richmond Savings and Loan Association and a past secretary of the New Richmond Cemetery Association. He had been active in scouting for 10 years and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was also a World War I veteran. Surviving besides the widow are a son, Robert of Marion; a daughter, Mrs. Sydney Self of Sudbury, Mass.; two sisters, Miss Lela Hanawalt of West Lafayette and Mrs. Nettie Kemmer of Lafayette; five grandsons, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Helms Funeral Chapel in Linden where friends may call. Rev. Arthur Schenck will officiate and burial will be in New Richmond Cemetery.
