Ernest Lloyd Hampton 61, a plasterer and carpenter most of his life, who was gassed in the battle of the Argonne during WWI, died at 2:10 a.m. Saturday at his home, 414 Lafayette Ave. A native of Thorntown, Mr. Hampton was born Nov 29, 1890, the son of Samuel A. and Ida Walton Hampton. He married Dorothy Smith at Lebanon April 10, 1919. Mr. Hampton who was a member of the St. James Lutheran Church, Darlington, spent most of his life in Darlington and vicinity. He had been a resident of Crawfordsville since 1947. Surviving are the widow; six daughters, Mrs. Charles Foughty, Huntington; Mrs. Courtland Hutcheson, Lafayette; Mrs. Tithridge G. Preston, Lafayette; Shirley Ann, Barbara Kay and Marilyn Lou all at home; 3 sons, Richard Dale Hampton, Crawfordsville; Pvt. Donald Max Hampton in service with the army in Korea and Gerald Hampton in Crawfordsville; a brother Cecil B. Hampton, 7 grandchildren and his mother, Mrs. Ida Hampton of Darlington. He was preceded in death by three sons, Frederick, Samuel and Ralph Hampton. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Bright Funeral Home. Rev. Wilbur E. Allen of Indianapolis will officiate and burial will be in St. James Lutheran Cemetery east of Darlington. -- kbz
