Dr. Thomas Haller of 38 Del Mar Drive, a member of the local medical community since the 1940s, died unexpectedly at his home at 8 am. today after suffering a heart attack. Dr. Haller retired from professional practice in March 1974. He was appointed to the Culver Hospital medical staff in 1947, and at the time of his retirement was associated with Ben Hur Surgical Group, Inc. A native of Chicago, Dr. Haller came to Crawfordsville and was associated with George A. Collett, M.D., on a part-time basis. The two physicians worked together from 1943 until 1946. Prior to that time, Dr. Haller was medical director for Community Hospital at Williamsport. He served in that capacity from 1942 until 1946. Dr. Haller earned his B.S. and M.D. degree at Northwestern University, completing medical school in 1931. He received his surgical training at Los Angeles County General Hospital, Barnes Hospital at St. Louis and Washington University Medical School at St. Louis. Dr. Haller's teaching experience includes a six-year term as medical director of clinics at the Chicago Medical School. He also held a staff appointment with Lutheran Deaconess Hospital at Chicago. Dr. Haller’s surgical associations at Crawfordsville in addition to that with Dr. Collett included working with Hawthorne C. Wallace, M.D., from 1947 to 1961, and with Dr. V. G. Viray since 1961 and Dr. Jose Peralta since 1972, both members of the Ben Hur Surgical Group. He held fellowships in several surgical societies including American College of Surgeons, International College of Surgeons, American College of Gastroenterology and American Society of Abdominal Surgeons. Dr. Haller’s other professional associations included American Medical Association, Indiana State Medical Association, Montgomery County Medical Society, American Proctological Society, Pan-American Surgical Association, American Board of Abdominal Surgery, founder member Royal Society of Medicine (London) and Collegium Internationale Chirugiae Digestivae (Rome). Surviving are the widow, Helen, and three children, Mrs. Theodore (Judith Helen) Simon of Honolulu, Hawaii, Susan Kay Haller of Chicago and Mrs. William (Linda Anne) Bronner of Evanston, Ill. The Funeral for Dr. Thomas Haller, 68, retired Crawfordsville surgeon, will be at 10:30 Monday in Hunt and Son funeral Home with the Rev. Larimore Wickett officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Dr. Haller was fatally stricken at his home Friday morning. He was born Dec. 29, 1907, at Chicago, a son of Joseph and Sophia Cutill Haller. Surviving in addition to his wife, Helen, and three daughters,are three sisters, Mrs. Jackson (Beatrice) Wosham of Battle Creek, Moch., Mrs. David (Helen) Mill of Chicago and Mrs. Fred (Mildred) Nillson of South Palm Beach, Fla., and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Bronner. He was preceded in death by a brother, John.
