LAURA RUTHERFORD HALL

Source: Darlington Herald Darlington, Montgomery County, Indiana Friday 2-15-1916

Mrs. Laura Hall whose recent death we mentioned last week, descended from a typical old southern family. She was the daughter of Dr. George Rutherford a prominent physician. One brother was in Scotland attending Edinburg University when the Civil War broke out. He returned home and recruited the 22nd SC Infantry and made its Colonel. He was killed by a Union sharp shooter. A monument has since been erected to his memory. After her mother's death Aunt Laura kept house for her father until her marriage to James Hall in 1867. Mr. Hall then resided near Yountsville and was engaged in buying mules and selling them in the south. It was on one of these trips he met Miss Rutherford. After their marriage they came to Darlington where they resided many years. Uncle Jim and Aunt Laura as everyone called them were noted for their hospitality. They were friends to all the children and many a man and woman of today can testify how Aunt Laura handed out sweets to them from her little cupboard. As years went by and age came upon them, Uncle Jim was stricken with paralysis and after years of patient suffering died. Sickness had many a great drain on their little store of money but with true southern pride Aunt Laura had kept this to herself. Friends came to her assistance and a home was offered her by a niece Mrs. Laura Engle in Pomaria, SC. Aunt Laura disposed of the old home and went there several years ago. Her greatest regret was leaving the burial place of her husband and for a long time afterward she sent decorations here for his grave. It had always been her wish to be buried beside him but during her last illness she had given up the idea. So all that remained of Aunt Laura the quaint little lady who befriended so many was laid to rest near the old home in the south she loved so well. - typed by kbz
