Mayme Webb Groves, 89, died at 1:45 a.m. Sunday at the Ben Hur Home, where she had been a resident for the past year and a half. She was the widow of David A. Groves, long associated with the First National Bank & Trust Co.; who died in 1965, and the mother of Aquilla W. and Charles T. Groves of Crawfordsville. A daughter, Martha, died in 1923 at the age of 16. Mrs. Groves was born Feb. 25, 1879, in Wingate, a daughter of Charles T. and Olive Dell Webb. She married Mr. Groves Oct. 5, 1904 in Wingate. The family moved to Crawfordsville in 1911. The family residence was at 103 Simpson St. She attended school in Wingate through the 10th year and was graduated from high school in Frankfort, after which she studied at the Normal School in Marion. She was graduated from the Boucher School of Elocution. She was well-known in Montgomery County for dramatic entertainments and continued her career after moving to Crawfordsville teaching and participating in dramatic productions including those of the old Crawfordsville Dramatic Club. At the age of 9, she introduced Gen. Lew Wallace at a patriotic meeting at Meharry's Grove north of Wingate. Years later she shared the Chautauqua platform at Remington, Ind., with William Jennings Bryan. Mrs. Groves became a member early of Wingate Methodist Church. On moving to Crawfordsville, in 1911, she transferred to the First Christian Church where she taught many years in the church school, particularly the Faithful Circle Class of young women. While active in other organizations, including the Current Events Club, her abiding concern remained in the work of the church. In addition to her sons, she is survived by three grandchildren, Mrs. Alison H. Price of Cape May Court House, N. J., Samuel T. Groves of New Haven, Conn., and Charles Arthur Groves of Crawfordsville, and two great-grandchildren, Rachael and Alison H. Price III. Two brothers preceded her in death. Memorial services will be held in the First Christian Church at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday with Rev. Howard E. Miller officiating, assisted by Rev. Larimore K. Wickett. Friends may call at Hunt and Son Funeral Home after 4 p.m. today. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery at Wingate. Friends are asked to omit flowers, but the family will be pleased to know of any gifts made to the church or other benevolent institutions in Mrs. Groves’ memory.--waw
