Arnett R. Groves, 67, retired officer of Elston Bank & Trust Co died early Wednesday morning at Culver Hospital following a serious illness of several week's duration. Mr. Groves was born August 1, 1887 on a farm north of Waynetown the son of Aquilla W. and Lenora Russell Groves. He attended school at Waynetown and was graduated from the high school there. Following his graduation he attended the Indianapolis Business College from which he was also graduated. During WWI, Mr. Groves served with the 139th Field Artillery much of his service having been overseas in France. Following his discharge from service, Mr. Groves became associated with Farmers & Merchants Trust in Crawfordsville in March 1919. Mr. Groves was twice married. His first wife was Evelyn Vadebanceur, who died in 1920. He was married March 31, 1934 to Hazel Shriver of near Romney. No children were born to either marriage. After six years service with Farmer & Merchants, Mr. Groves became associated with Elston Bank & Trust at the time of the merger of the Elston Bank & Farmers & Merchants Turst Co as assistant secretary and trust officer. Following the death of John C. Snyder, Mr. Groves was promoted to sec-treas and made a director of the bank. While he was still a director at the time of his death, Mr. Groves had not been secretary-treasurer since he retired Dec 31, 1954. Active in community life, throughout his business carreeer in Crawfordsville, Mr. Groves had been associated with various institutions. He was a charter member of Byron Cox Post of the American Legion. He attended the initial meeting held in the Courthouse Sept 1, 1919. Later he served for 3 years as the finance officer of the post. Active in the workd of the Elks Lodge in Crawfordsville, Mr. Groves was a past exaltedruler. He was a member of Montgomery Lodge No 50, Free & Accepted Masons in Crawfordsville. For a number of years he had been active in his work with the Kiwanis Club of which he was a past president. He was also the club's song leader. Mr. Groves was a memberof the Crawfordsville Country Club of which he was past president and past sec-treasuerer. Since he had recently sold his East Main Street residence and pending the completion of the construction of his new residence being build on the Country Club Road, Mr. Groves and Mrs. Groves have been making their home with his sister, Mrs. Verne W. Livengood at her home, 418 W Main. Mr. Groves is survived by his wife; his sister, Mrs. Livengood and a brother, David A. Groves, 103 Simpson St, Crawfordsville. Two other sisters, Mrs. Savanna Francis and Miss Bettie Groves both of Waynetown; two brothers, Samuel M. Groves of Crawfordsville who met death in an accident Jan 28, 1954 and William E. Groves of Hillsboro preceded Mr. Groves in death. One niece and 5 nephews also survive. In respect to the memory of Mr. Groves, the Elston Bank will be closed at noon Friday for the remainder of the day. Funeral services will be conductedat the First Methodist Church Friday at 2 p.m. with the pastor, Rev. Donald F. McMahan as the officiating minister. Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the church for one hour before the services. Friends may call at the Bright Funeral Home until noon Friday. - kbz
