"Black Creek" Item -- Friends and relatives gathered at the residence of John Groenendyke on the 12th inst to celebrate the 80th birthday of his mother. She was born in Fandolph Co NC in 1804 came to Wayne Co, this state in 1810. Was married to Peter Grovendyke (sic) June 20, 1820, came to Montgomery County in 1825. She is a sister of the late John Beard, is the mother of 11 children, bu t three living, one son and two daughters, 9 of her children lived to be grown. Number of grandchildren 44, number living 28, number of great grandchildren, 44. Her husband died August 20, 1854. She has been a member of the ME Church for many years. Her health is good for a woman of her age. The day was spent in social talk, those present enjoyed it very much, many more friends would have been present if the weather had not been so disagreeable. -- kbz

On last Friday the friends and relatives of John Groendyke met at his residence to celebrate the 80th anniversary of his mother's birth.. Mrs. Groendyke was born in Randolph County, NC in 1804; came to Wayne County, Indiana in 1810 and was married to Peter Groendyke June 20, 1820 and came to Montgomery in 1825. She is a sister of the late John Beard and is the mother of 11 children, but 3 of whom are living. Nine of her children lived to be grown – grandchildren, 44 in number of those living 28; number of great grandchildren 44 and some counties not heard from. Her husband died August 20 1854. She has been a member of the ME Church for many years. The day was spent very enjoyably by all, and by none more than the worthy woman in whose honor the feast was given. -- kbz

Died at the residence of her son, John H. Groendyke, six miles NW of Crawfordsville on Friday Nov 19, 1886, Mrs. Hannah Bear Groendyke, aged 83 years. Mrs. Gronendyke was born in Randolph County, NC and removed with her parents to eastern Indiana when a child where she married the late Peter Groendyke and moved thence to this country, where she lived for more than 50 years; the greater part of which time she maintained a high rank as an exemplary member of the ME Church; a christian mother and friend in the truest sense; and in her death leaves a host of relatives and old-time friends to mourn her demise. Mrs. Groendyke leaves behind her a large family of relatives; two daughters and one son (mother of 11); 28 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren. Elder Orr of the Christian Church officiated at the funeral on Sunday following the death and the remains were interred at the Quick Cemetery, in the immediate vicinity of the family residence. -- kbz
