Newcastle, June 25 - Charles Grissom, aged 50, early today fired 4 bullets into the body of his wife, Julia Grissom, 46, probably fatally wounding her and then sent a ball crashing into his own brain, causing instant death. The tragedy was the culmination of a family quarrel of long standing and followed threats made by Grissom against his wife and himself. Two months ago Grissom retained an attorney to bring action for divorce from his wife, but later directed his lawyer to wait awhile before filing the suit. Mrs. Grissom then engaged an attorney to bring divorce proceedings for her and the complain was drawn and was to have been filed today. This morning the husband went to his wife's room, closed the door and with his back against it fired twice with a short-barrelled 32 revolver. Mrs. Grissom escaped screaming from the room and ran down the hall. She was shot the third time as she left the front door and received the four shot while in the yard, falling prostrate. The suicide of the husband then followed. The man died instantly. Physicians stated at 10 this morning that the wife had a chance for recovery but that it was a matter of grave doubt. Mrs. Grissom & members of the family refuse to discuss the affairs. (line between articles) A message announcing the tragedy at Newcastle was received early today by Mrs. Fred Warbington of this city, daughter of the dead man and wounded woman, and Mrs. Warbington left at once for Newcastle to be at her mother's bedside. Mr. and Mrs. Grissom lived in this community several years ago and were known to a large number of people in the county. For some time they resided in Ladoga. Thomas Grissom, deceased, long a resident of Whitesville, was a brother of the man and his wife a sister of Mrs. Charles Grissom. A message was received at Whitesville by Mrs. Thomas Grissom and she left at once for Newcastle. The information of the tragedy was received here with a shock and sorrow by many friends of the participants and local relatives. The near victim of the traged and Mrs. Thomas Grissom of Whitesville are the daughters of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Hanifan of Ladoga , both of whom died some years ago. - kbz
