Fred P. Grimes, chief of the Crawfordsville police department on two occasions before his retirement from the force in 1954, died Monday afternoon at Culver Hospital. He had been in failing health for some time. Mr. Grimes, 82, was taken from his home at 203 Jones Ave., to the hospital Monday morning. He served 32 years as a policeman here. In 1943 he succeeded Merle Remley as chief. He also served as chief from 1952 until he retired March 5, 1954. He joined the force in 1921. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. Before becoming a policeman he operated the American Laundry here with his father, James P. Grimes, who was chief of police for about 10 years near the turn of the century. He was one of the founders of the Crawfordsville Community Sportsmen's Club west of the city and was active in its affairs for more than 25 years. A Crawfordsville native, Mr. Grimes was born Aug. 28, 1885, to James P. and Alice Long Grimes. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Wren in June, 1907. He later was married to Mary White in March, 1943. Surviving are the widow; two stepdaughters, Marilyn White of Bradenton, Fla., and Carolyn Hammitt of Joliet, Ill.; a stepson, Gordon White of Oakland, Ark., and a brother, Montie Grimes of Daytona Beach, Fla. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a. m. Thursday at Hunt and Son Funeral Home, with Rev. John R. Servies officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may pay respects at the funeral home after 7 p.m. today.
