Mrs. Mahala Catterlin Griffith died today at 11 o’clock at the advanced age of 83 years, of influenza and pneumonia. Mrs. Griffith was born in Hamilton, Ohio, April 6, 1807. In 1822 she came with her parents to this county and settled on the Stafford farm just east of the city. In 1827 she was married to Townsend Griffith and commenced housekeeping in a little house where the engine now stands. Her husband died in 1852. She has but one sister living who reached her bedside a few hours before her death.Four of her children survive her, E. C. Griffith and Mrs. Matilda Galey, of this city, Mrs. George Warbinton near the city, and Mrs. Morgan Snook of Kansas.

Mrs. Mahala Catterlin Griffith, whose death occurred yesterday, was born in Butler County, Ohio, April 17, 1807, and was the eldest daughter of a family of sixteen children, all of whom have preceded her to the spirit world except the youngest, Mrs. Louvier Douglass, of Frankfort, who arrived an hour before her sister’s death. A sister, Mrs. Marilla Hoopes, died Dec. 28, at Otis, Cal. She was the daughter of Ephraim and Sarah Catterlin, who came to this county in 1822 and settled on the farm now owned by Rev. G. W. Stafford, Mr. Catterlin buying the land at the Land Office at Terre Haute before the location of the Land Office at this place. He built his pioneer cabin in the dense forest and began to make a home. There were no roads and a wild untouched forest were the surroundings. Crawfordsville had not then an existence. Pioneers came and developments went on. On November 1, 1827, she married Townsend Griffith, and to them were born nine children, of whom only four survive, whose names were mentioned yesterday. Townsend, her husband, died on his return from a visit to Minnesota, of cholera, near Galena, Ills., June 2, 1852, in his 51st year. They were pioneer settlers on Black Creek, but removed to this town, corner of Green Street and Wabash Avenue, where Mrs. Griffith has resided for more than fifty years. Her neighbors knew her as a generous, good woman. In religious faith she was a Primitive Baptist. The funeral will occur tomorrow at 1:30 o’clock and will be conducted by Rev. G. W. Stafford, who officiated at her husband’s obsequies thirty eight years ago.
The funeral of Mrs. Mahala Griffith will occur on Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the residence. The services will be conducted by Rev. G. W. Stafford and assisted by Rev. G. W. Switzer. The interment will be at the Masonic Cemetery.
The remains of Mrs. Mahala Griffith were taken from the vault at the Masonic Cemetery yesterday and interred. Only the relatives and a few friends were present, Rev. G. W. Stafford conducted short services.
