DIED—At his residence, 7 miles south of Crawfordsville, Sept. 9th, 1869, Alpheus Gregg, aged 68 years. Another one of the old pioneers has passed away. Mr. Gregg was among the first settlers of this county. He was born in Butler county. Ohio, in 1801, and moved to this county in 1826. He built his rude cabin in the wilderness, and being a man of strong arm and inflexible will, cleared away the surrounding forest and soon became the possessor of a fine farm. Having a strong constitution he, survived the hardships of frontier life and retained remarkable good health even to within two weeks of his death. In that early day when books and newspapers are few he was accustomed after his day's labor was ended to seat himself beside the blazing fire and read his Bible, which he made the man of his counsel. In this manner he committed a large portion of the Scriptures to memory and even in his old age could repeat chapter after chapter with great fluency. He was a man of liberal views, a kind neighbor, a good citizen, and withal generous. His roof was ever the shelter of the orphan, and the poor never went away from his door empty handed, those who knew him loved and esteemed him. After a brief but severe illness he quietly and peacefully passed away. The memory of the good is ever blessed. - thanks Kim H :) You rock - kbz
