From the Watseka, Ill Republican – only surviving sister of Eleazer Wilhite
Died at her home in West Watseks, Thursday night, April 11, 1901, Mrs. Elizabeth Graham in her 78th year. Mr. SA Force, a near neighbor who delivers milk at the house every morning found the door locked Friday morning and was unable to arouse anyone within. He was joined later by Mr. Evans who was billed to do some painting and papering that day. They finally effected an entrance and found the body of Mrs. Graham, form which life had long since gone out, reclining on the sofa. Her bible and spectacles lay upon the stand nearby. It would seem that ere she ha scarcely finished reading some of the many precious promises in the book she loved so well a sudden pain at the heart forced her to recline on the sofa. Here she must have gently breathed her life away all alone as her niece, Mrs. Carroll who has been staing with her was away from the home at the time. A coroner’s inquest held Friday forenoon rendered a verdict in accordance with the facts here stated. Mrs Graham was born in Hardin County, Kentucky July 4, 1823. She was married to Joseph A. Graham in 1848. They moved to Midleport in January 1851 where Mr. Graham began the publication of the Iruquois County Journal the first paper ever published in the county. After some three years he sold out and they moved to Janesville, Wis returning in 1856. In May of that year he founded the Republican at old Middleport, afterwards changed to Watseka and the paper has been in continuous publican ever since. Mr. Graham died Dec 1, 1888 since which time Mrs. Graham has lived practically alone except when Mrs. Carroll has been with her. Mrs. Graham was a member of the Presbyterian Church from which she was buried Monday afternoon, Rev. Guille officiating. The deceased had the respect of all who knew her and she was undoubtedly one of the sweetest, most patient and loveable of all characters. The following were in attendance from outside the county: EA Wilhite, her brother; WB Griffith, her nephew; and her nieces, Mrs. Dumont Kennedy, Mrs. AM Griffith, Miss Mary Griffith, Mrs. Lucy Kanouse and Mrs. Carroll, all of Crawfordsville. - kbz
