Mahlon Goodwin was born Oct. 3, 1820 and died Aug. 26, 1900, at the home of his son in Frankfort, Ind. Mr. Goodwin was a soldier, having served in Co. C. of the 54th Indiana Infantry, seeing one year’s service. For many years after the war he lived near here and was well known and respected by all. His wife died some years ago and was buried in the I.O.O. F. Cemetery at this place. Shortly before his death he requested that he be laid by her side and in accordance with that request his remains were shipped to this place, where his old comrades took charge and did as he had requested. At the grave the Rev. A. L. West was called upon and responded in a few well chosen and appropriate remarks for the occasion and in a touching manner warned all that we prepare for death as we are fast passing away, the last old comrade will be gone; soon the old soldier of ’61 will be no more. -s
