Chalres Winford Gooding, 76, a former resident of Crawfordsville died at his home, 128 First St, Shelbyville Thursday morning.
Mr. Gooding was born near Wallace in Jackson Township, Fountain County Jan 22, 1878, son of Allen Gooding and Susanna Amanda (Myers). He attended the Wallace school in his youth., Mrs. Gooding was married April 3, 1908 to Ella Woolley in the Lutheran Church parsonage near Wallace.
After living for a brief period on a farm south of Wallace, Mr. Gooding obtained a position with the Vandalia Railroad in Decatur, Ill. He was employed for three years when he returned to farming near Wallace. Later, he also farmed near RUssellville and also near Danville.
Moving to Noblesville after several years, he was associated with the Celatine Light Company. While living in Noblesville, Mr. Gooding ran for sheriff of Hamilton County and was the fisrt Democrat to serve that capacity in Hamilton County in 100 years. He served two years as sheriff and then moved to Georgetown SC where he resided six years. Returning to Indiana, he moved to a farm in the Wesley neighborhood northwest of Crawfordsville.
Coming to Crawfordsville in 1943 to reside, Mr. Gooding lived about eight years ag 510 W. Market St. He moved to Shelbyville in 1951 where he resided at the time of his death. Mr. Gooding is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Thompson of Shelbyville, and Mrs. Maurice Newman of Oakwell, Va; four grandsons; a sister, Mrs. Zula Gains and half-sister, Mrs. Lear Summers both of whom reside near Wallace; two brothers, ALonzo Gooding of near Waynetown and Ephie Gooding who is in the Methodist Memorial Home at Warren.
Preceding Mr. Gooding in death was a sister, Mrs. Sue Parrish of near Waynetown and half-sister, Mrs. Barker of Yeddo. Funeral services will be in the Waynetown Cemetery. Friends may call at the Bright Funeral Home in Crawfordsville. Friday evening and until noon SUnday. The body will then be taken to the Wesley Church where it will lie in state for one hour before the servic e- kbz
