Golliday - John

John Golliday has reached New Ross in a precarious condition. He was enroute from Kansas in a freight car with his household goods and he reports that after leaving Peoria a brakeman entered his car and demanded whiskey. Golliday answered that he had none and after threatening him, the brakeman left. Still later Golliday laid down to sleep in which he was struck twice by the brakeman, who had armed himself with a car pin. Golliday was terribly injured and he received no surgical attention until reaching New Ross.
Note: He may not have passed away - can not find when he did but doesn't seem like he could have possibly made it

New Ross, June 10—Last night as John Golliday was coming home from Kansas on the night through freight in charge of his household goods and stock, a brakeman entered his car just this side of Peoria and asked John to produce some alcohol. To this John replied that he never used it, and had none at his command; whereupon the drunken brakeman used some very disgraceful language and left the car saying, “you will have wished you had obtained the fire water before you get to New Ross.” John supposing all was over, laid down and was soon asleep. The dastardly trainman then sought the end aimed at and stealing into the car, like a cat, armed with a coupling pin, he went at his bloody work for the purpose of robbery. He dealt Golliday a heavy blow upon the forehead, the force of which was broken by its glancing off. Again before Mr. Golliday could gain his feet, he was dealt a terrific blow over the nose, partially stunning him. Then gaining his feet he made a desperate rush at the villain and pushed him from the car. He arrived here this morning and his face presented a sickening spectacle; his scalp was laid open several inches to the skull and his nose was fearfully mashed. He is now under the care of the doctors and suffering greatly.
