The Clover Leaf had a freight wreck at Stevens station a mile and a quarter west of Mellott late Friday afternoon, when the tracks under a boxcar in the middle of the train left the rails, while the train was running fast, and 15 other cars followed the first one into the ditch. Eight young men of Veedersburg, lads of 15-18 years of age were stealing a ride in one of the wrecked cars, having gone to Mellott earlier in the afternoon on a freight and had boarded this through freight for home. One of the boys, Cyril Glover, aged 16, son of John Glover of Veedersburg, deputy sheriff of Fountain County was killed outright his head having been severed from his body and his person being mutilated into an unrecognizable mass. All the other 7 boys were more or less injured, the worse injured being Dewey Merrill, Ora Stonebraker, Marion Ocheltree and Herman Dove. The Merrill boy was the most seriously hurt and it was feared his injuries might prove fatal. The injured lads were first taken to Mellott for medical attention and later in the evening were taken to their homes in Veedersburg. The wreck blockaded traffic over that section of the road for a time, the night passenger trains being retoured and no trains were ran past the wrecks until next day. - kbz
