Samuel Gilliland, one of the pioneers of Montgomery County, died on Sunday morning at 1 o´clock at the advanced age of 80 years. He has been in failing health for sometime caused by a derangement of the bladder and his death was therefore not unexpected. Samuel Gilliland was born in Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania, about 1809, and was the tenth child in a family of eleven children by John and Hannah Gilliland. When he was sixteen he left home and came to Butler county, Ohio, where he lived six years, and where he obtained his education, which was limited, and where December 20, 1832, he was married to Polly Tronsdale. In 1833 he came to Montgomery county, and settled on the Terre Haute road, five miles southwest of Crawfordsville. With $300 that he had he purchased eighty acres of land. This with a two horse team and a little household furniture, was all the property he had at the time. He lived on this farm forty-five years, and then in 1878 moved to a farm two miles southwest of the city where he remained until four or five years ago when he came to this city. His wife died in 1844, and on March 9, 1848, he married Sarah Miller, who died in 1870. By the first wife he became the father of five children: John T., Lydia Jane, Anna L., wife of Emmons Busenbark, Margaret, wife of John Remley, and William, who died in infancy. The second wife bore Mary E., wife of William Smith, Martha E., wife of Edward Ray, Nancy L., Samuel M., James B., William C., and Henry E. Mr. Gilliland was county commissioner for sixteen or seventeen years, and was regarded as one of the most careful, pain-taking and economical men that ever filled that office. By hard labor and economical management he has accumulated a handsome fortune. He owns thirteen or fourteen hundred acres of choice land, is a large stockholder in the Citizens National Bank, besides being the possessor of other stocks, bonds and money. He first settled in the woods and has done his full share in clearing off the woods and improving the land. The funeral services occurred Monday from his late residence on College street at 2 o´clock, conducted by. Rev. G.W. Switzer. Interment was made at Oak Hill Cemetery. - kbz
