John W. Gilliland, 68, who has been ill for several months at his home west of town with heart trouble, became worse last week and was taken back to Culver Hospital on Friday for treatment. He seemed to rally and when his sons, John and Harold, left the hospital at 11:30 on Saturday night he was resting easily. He died at 11:50. Funeral services at the Christian Church on Tuesday afternoon in charge of Rev. RL Hartling. Mr. Walker played a program of church songs before the sermon. The casket was carried by the six sons: Earl; Sherman; Joseph; John; James and Harold. The flowers were carried by Mesdames CF Moore; CM Moore; Raymond Moore; TS Banta; Gordon Moser; Russell Powerll; TN Johnson; Fred Rice; Donald Martin; Forest Colman; Guy Durham; Loudermill; Slavens; Harbeson and Misses Martha Dillman; Jean Kolling and Roberta Evernham. Burial at Indian Creek Cemetery. Mr. Gilliland was born at New Market. He was the son of James J. and Rebecca Gilliland. He married Miss Lou Moody of Browns Valley, Nov 19, 1891. For some time he was in the livery business in Waveland, the building standing where Hubert Loudermill's residence now stands. He entered the employ of the Midland RR as a brakeman, later as a conductor. While making a switch at Advance he received injuries to his hip and leg that led to his retirement. He later bought the farm where he died. He was a member of the Browns Valley Baptist Church and Knights of Pythias. He is survived by the wife and 10 children: Earl E of Plymouth; Sherman of Rockville; Joseph a d Harold of Crawfordsville; James of Lafayette and John at home; Grace of Kankakee, Ill; Genave of Philadelphia pa; Mrs. Forest Jackman of Crawfordsville and Mrs. Robert Pruitt of Huntington, W Va and 3 grandchildren, Mrs. Dora Fry, Donald and LaMoyne Gilliland. One son, Herman, 3 years old, died in 1898. - kbz
