James J. Gilliland, 70, a State Policeman for 25 1/2 years and former Ladoga, North-Salem and Roachdale Town marshal died at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday in St. Vincent Hospital at Indianapolis. He was a member of the Eagles 1005, the Darlington F&AM and the Fraternal Order of Police. He was a member of the National Guard for 15 years and worked for the State Highway for eight years. He was graduated from New Market. High School in 1928 and attended Wabash College. Born Dec. 13, 1909 at New Market, he was a son of Clarence and Grace Miller Gilliland. He was married in 1932 to Pearl Allen, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Keith I (Donna) Clark and Mrs. George V. (Betty) Priest, both of Crawfordsville; two brothers, Daniel Gilliland of Roachdale and Robert Gilliland of Baton Rouge, La.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson and a brother. Services are at 1 p.m. Friday in Hunt and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Austin officiating. Burial will in Masonic Cemetery with Eagles services at graveside. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Thursday with Masonic Rites at 8 p.m. - kbz
