DEATH SUMMONS RACHEL QUILLEN MOTHER OF CONGRESSMAN-ELECT DIES AT HOME IN ROACHDALE

Roachdale, April 8 – Mrs. Rachel Gillen, 83, mother of Congressman-elect Courtland Gillen, of Greencastle, died at her home here Wednesday morning at 1 o’clock. Death was due to heart trouble and followed a serious illness of two weeks. Mrs. Gillen was a member of a pioneer Putnam county family and had a wide acquaintance.

The deceased was born in Putnam county of Sept. 3, 1847, the daughter of Glasco (sic) and Nancy D. Edwards. She spent practically all of her life in Putnam county. Her husband preceded her in death on Aug. 20, 1924. Most of Mrs. Gillen’s life was spent on the farm although in recent years she had made her home in Roachdale.

The survivors are the one son, Courtland Gillen, of Greencastle; one grandson and two granddaughters, all of whom live in Greencastle; two brothers, John Edwards and Roy [sic. Robert?] F. Edwards, both of Roachdale, and a sister, Mrs. John O. Smith, who also lives in Roachdale. Another son, Asa Gillen, died Jan. 22, 1920.

The funeral services will be held at the residence Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock in charge of the Rev. Cornelius L. Airhart of Crawfordsville. Burial will take place in the Roachdale cemetery. [Crawfordsville Journal Review on 8 April, 1931 page 6. Note the mistake in the headline! ]

MRS. RACHEL GILLEN FUNERAL FRIDAY

Funeral service for Mrs. Rachel Gillen of Roachdale, mother of Congressman Courland (sic) C. Gillen of this city, who died in her home there Thursday night, will be Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the home of the deceased. Burial wil (sic) be in the Roachdale cemetery.
