Marjorie Jane Gilkey, 88, died Dec. 17, 2012, at the Franklin United Methodist Community. She was born Oct. 12, 1924, in Montgomery County to Manning Gilkey and Nellie (Livengood) Gilkey. Survivors include a brother, Leslie Gilkey of Seymour; a nephew, Thomas Gilkey of Mendota Heights, Minn.; and five nieces, Juliet Bogosian of Manila, Philippines, Sandra Gilkey of Orlando, Fla., Heidi Giuntoli and Martha Merrell, both of Baltimore, Md., and Lisa Smith of Asheville, N.C. Marge graduated from Crawfordsville High School and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University. She also attended Butler University and New York University. Marge taught in Beech Grove and Columbus and at Franklin College from 1963 until her retirement in 1985. Marge belonged to several professional associations and local clubs. She was a longtime member of and very active in St. Thomas Episcopal Church, including the construction of the current church building. Marge loved working in her garden and was very interested in environmental issues. She also will be remembered by her many friends for her great sense of humor. The Rev. Richard A. Halladay and Deacon Alice Goshorn will conduct a memorial service for Marge at 11 a.m. Jan. 22 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 600 Paul Hand Blvd., Franklin. Her ashes will be buried at the St. Thomas cemetery.
