Source: Crawfordsville Weekly Journal 18 April 1913 p 5

James R. Gilkey, a pioneer resident of this county, one of the most widely known and best liked men in the county, died at his home 2 miles W. of this city, at four this morning. Suffering for 3 years with tuberculosis, Mr. Gilkey's condition became serious about six weeks ago and since that time his death has been a matter of time. Funeral services will be held from the late home at 10:30 Wednesday morning. The services will probably be in charge of Rev. WH Fertic, pastor of the local Trinity ME Church. Burial will be made in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Gilkey was born near Yountsville March 1846 and was 67 years of age when he died. He was the son of the late John and Hannah Stringham Gilkey. Until 4 years ago he lived in the old home near Yountsville coming from that place to the home where his death occurred 4 years ago. In November 1876, he was married to Alice Wilcox, near Yountsville. She together with one daughter, Mrs. FA Dennis of this city survive. Of a family of 9 Mr. Gilkey was the last to die, his two brothers and six sisters having preceded him to the grave during the past years. He was known to a great many of the residents of the county as a thoroughly honest and industrious man. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, having united with this organization at Alamo a number of years ago. Mr. Gilkey was a nephew of Admiral Stringham of the US Navy, one of the country's famous naval officers. He was a brother of the late Daniel Gilkey of this city - typed by kbz.
