James Campbell Gabriel, 77, of 114 S. Grant Ave., a retired U.S. Army Reserve colonel, died early today in Culver Hospital.

  Col. Gabriel served more than 34 years with the reserves, 20 years of which were on active duty.  He retired April 30, 1955.  He began his military career by enlisting as a private in the regular army in 1917 and was honorably discharged as a technical sergeant, balloon and airship pilot, in 1922.  Col. Gabriel was commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Service, Organized Reserve Corps on June 18, 1925, and entered extended active duty in 1940.

 He was promoted to major and in 1950 to the rank of colonel.  He served in varied assignments in the United States and foreign service, including Italy and Germany.

  Col. Gabriel received the following decorations and service medals while with the service: Bronze Star, World War I Victory Medal, Army of Occupation of Germany Medal, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with one silver service star, World War II Victory Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with one 10-year device and French Croix de Guerre Order of the Corps of Army.

  Col. Gabriel was a member of the American Legion, 40 & 8, retired Officers Association Sojourners. He attended the Christian Church.  He was educated in California and Missouri.

  Born February 6, 1898, in Moniteau county, Mo., he was a son of Amsy Patrick and Elizabeth Gabriel.  He was married to Mary Frances Abraham on August 11, 1920, at Washington, D.C. She survives.

  Also surviving are two sons, James L. of Indianapolis and Robert of Oakland, California;  three brothers, Vincell of Versailles, Mo., Grant of South Haven, Mich., and Carl of Needles, Calif.;  a sister, Ann Hansen of Versailles, Mo.; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
  Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hunt & Son Funeral Home with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday.
