Source: Crawfordsville Review 29 Jan 1918 p1

Waynetown, Ind Jan 28 – Harry Fugate, son of Mr. and Mrs. James Fugate of Waynetown and a former resident here was killed Sunday morning between 9:30 and 10:00 o’clock in a distressing accident a few miles out of Danville, Ill when the northbound New York Central train struck a motor car in which Mr. Fugate and one companion, Mr. Smith were riding. The train crew did not perceive the accident and it was probably an hour afterward when a farmer discovered the bodies.  The train struck the motor car which was headed south and also against the current of traffic instead of on the southbound track, and tossed Mr. Smith into the ditch and Mr. Fugate onto the other tracks. When the bodies were discovered one of the men was already dead and the other died soon afterwards.  Mr. Fugate was born and reared in Waynetown and his parents still live here. He was a man of about 35 years and was married but had no children. Until about 10 years ago he lived here but at that time he enlisted in the regular army and after four years service, including work in the Philippines. At the expiration of his service in the army he took up railroad work and at the time of his death he was employed as section hand for the Big Four.  He and his companion had taken another man several miles from Danville in the motor car and had turned about and headed toward Danville without changing from the northbound track to the southern one. The train crew knew nothing of the accident until they had reached another station several miles from Danville.  Following the discovery of the bodies word was sent ahead and investigation revealed that the engine had struck the car. It was learned here that the body will not be returned here for burial but will be laid at rest at Danville where Mr. Fugate had been living. - kz
